How to Recognize the Signs of Burnout


Do you ever wonder if you are suffering from burnout? Like seasonal affective disorder, it can sneak up on anyone until the symptoms get so severe it starts to negatively impact your work performance, relationships at home, and even your health.


Burnout has recently been added as a diagnosable condition where someone is in mental, emotional, and/or physical exhaustion caused by prolonged stress.


Recognizing the signs of burnout can help the individual understand why they are feeling like they are. With this understanding, they can begin to take the appropriate actions to get unstuck and back to feeling like themselves again.


Burnout is not a hopeless place. It's information telling you that, "HEY! Something needs to change."



Let’s take a closer look at some of the symptoms:


1. Chronic fatigue:

Burnout often leads to chronic fatigue, making it difficult to complete even simple tasks.

2. Lack of motivation:

Those experiencing burnout may feel a lack of motivation or enthusiasm for their work or other activities they previously enjoyed.

3. Difficulty concentrating:

Burnout can make it challenging to concentrate or focus, leading to decreased productivity.


4. Irritability and mood swings:

Those experiencing burnout may find themselves easily irritated or experiencing mood swings.

5. Reduced performance:

Burnout can affect one's ability to perform at the same level they previously could, leading to reduced performance in various areas of their life.

6. Physical symptoms:

Burnout can cause physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, and digestive problems.

7. Insomnia:

Burnout can lead to difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up feeling rested.

8. Feeling overwhelmed:



Those experiencing burnout may feel overwhelmed and may struggle to cope with daily stressors.

9. Cynicism:

Burnout can lead to a sense of cynicism or disillusionment, causing individuals to become negative and critical.



10. Social withdrawal:



Burnout can cause individuals to withdraw from social activities and relationships, leading to a sense of isolation.


There can be other causes and contributing factors to each of these symptoms but if you're feeling more than five of the above, you might be suffering from burnout.
